How to Start Your Spiritual Journey

By now, if you've been following this blog, you already know there are many ways to step onto the spiritual path. You already know that there are people out there who gatekeep within the community for some reason. This blog post is simply opinion based and purely anecdotal, but I feel like it might help someone along on the very start of their journey.

Many people believe we need to start by stripping ourselves of worldly objects such as cell phones, designer clothes, and junk food, but realistically, spirituality is about our human experience and all of those things are part of the experience. There is nothing you need to be getting rid of unless it is harmful to you. If you're addicted to Doritos, for instance, then maybe it's time to choose healthier habits. What I'm trying to say is that you don't need to revamp your whole wardrobe or life in order to delve into the esoteric. Spirituality takes time, it takes study, it takes inquiry, and it takes open mindedness, so the first thing I would tell you to do is open that mind of yours.

I read an amazing book that I talk about on my YouTube channel, The Tori Franco Show, called "10 Secrets to Success and Inner Peace" by Wayne Dyer, and the first secret is simple: Be open to anything and attached to nothing. This is the absolute first step to starting your spiritual journey. In fact, I might make it the only step in this series because, without it, nothing else can follow.

When you open your mind to the world of spirituality (or really anything you might be newly learning about) and detach from any beliefs or outcomes, you allow yourself to become fully immersed in the experience. Yes, you can meditate. Sure, you can start reading up about astrology, mythical Gods and Goddesses, Hermetic philosophy, and anything in between, but how will you ever grow with those topics if you become attached to any ideology?

In my own spiritual experience, there is always something new to learn or hear about. There is always a new person within the community who practices something that is completely different from what you've learned or heard. If we become attached to ideologies or practices from specific cultures or mystic teachings, we end up becoming the gatekeeping Karens we abhor. Let's not do that.

Your first and only step in becoming a more spiritual human and learning about all this shit is to keep an open mind and do not allow yourself to become attached to anything. Try things that resonate with you, keep them in practice if they feel good, throw away the rest, and repeat that process with every new thing you come across.

People in spiritual communities become so absolutely stuck on this part. It's amazing to refer someone to something, but when it becomes dangerous is when we start telling them what they need to be doing. Open mindedness is simply the beginning to all this stuff. It's key, yes, because you will be hearing stories about fairies in the trees and creatures in the seas, but the second part of the equation is remaining detached from anything. Allow yourself to explore and grow and I promise you will get to where you need to be in your spiritual journey. This, however, is the best way for you to begin.
